Healthy reefs are essential to Vanuatu’s environment, culture, food security and blue economy. At Abyss Vanuatu Ocean Institute (AVOI), our reef management programs combine kastom knowledge, local stewardship, scientific monitoring and practical restoration to deliver measurable outcomes for reefs, communities and future generations.
Our multidisciplinary team consists of highly skilled scientific and commercial divers, ecologists, marine biologists, data scientists, researchers, drone pilots and environmental project managers who work together to understand, protect and restore marine ecosystems. By combining local knowledge with world-class expertise and innovative technologies, we provide practical solutions that deliver real environmental, social and economic benefits.
Our approach is built around action, not theory. Through the Vanuatu Ocean Ranger Program, AVOI undertakes reef health assessments, coral monitoring, marine biodiversity surveys, fisheries enhancement programs, Reef Ball deployment, crown-of-thorns starfish mitigation, turtle conservation initiatives and long-term environmental monitoring. This integrated approach allows us to identify threats, measure ecosystem health and implement targeted restoration activities that produce lasting outcomes.
Effective reef management requires more than simply protecting an area on a map. It requires robust baseline data, ongoing monitoring, community support, local capacity building and adaptive management informed by both science and experience. AVOI's model combines advanced technologies including drone-based monitoring, GIS mapping, underwater survey techniques and environmental data analysis with the traditional knowledge and stewardship practices that have helped sustain Vanuatu's marine resources for generations.
Reef Balls form a key component of our restoration strategy, creating engineered underwater habitat that increases habitat complexity, supports coral recruitment, enhances fish populations and improves overall ecosystem resilience. When integrated with marine protected area planning, fisheries management and Ocean Ranger-led stewardship, Reef Balls provide a practical and scalable solution for restoring degraded marine environments.
